When Obi-Wan said to Luke of Mos Eisley, “you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy” he could very well have been speaking of its Earth bound equivalent, Port Royal. Once the hide-out and refuge of pirates and sea-faring gangsters alike Port Royal was a buzzing trade port where cads and scoundrels could spend their ill gotten booty.
Once branded the ‘the most wicked and sinful city in the world’ in 1692 catastrophe struck in the guise of a massive earthquake. Measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, the quake shook the island of Jamaica to its very roots, and unceremoniously sank Port Royal itself killing over 2,000 people in the process. For centuries people then believed that this was penance for the sins of the town, but really it was caused by the towns unstable foundations.
Port Royal now lies 40 feet below the surface of the ocean like a land that time forgot, quietly whiling away the centuries while we marvel at its preservation. It is a favourite destination for divers and archaeologists alike, with amazing artefacts still being discovered that continue to shed light on the time and tides of this naughty little town.
